This year’s Conference of the Santa Marta group emphasized the importance of taking the opportunity to provide a worldwide perspective on Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery.
The Conference brought together leaders in law enforcement, research institutes, NGO’s, Civil Society and Religious life, at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, on 8-9 February, to consider the dynamics of cause and effect, which facilitate the continuing increase in Human Trafficking and Modern-day Slavery. Pope Francis emphasized the need for the group to take into account both local and global considerations, encouraging them in their work. He further reminded them to ‘’…examine seriously the various forms of complicity by which society tolerates, and encourages, particularly with regard to the sex trade, the exploitation of vulnerable men, women and children (cf. Evangelii Gaudium, 211).’’
