read moreThe 2019 Season of Creation began Sunday, 1 September and runs through to October 4th, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. According to Pope Francis, this “is a time conducive to the praise of God for all his creatures and the assumption of responsibility in the face of the cry of the Earth.”
In his greetings following the recitation of the Angelus in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, the Pope told the faithful gathered that the Season of Creation is “an ecumenical prayer, which raises the awareness and commitment to protect our common home, starting from a more sustainable personal and family lifestyle.”
Mindful of the Push and Pull factors conducive to people being vulnerable to Human Trafficking and Exploitation, climate change is impacting on millions who have to try to leave their native homes in order to earn income to sustain families no longer able to live and/or work in their region due to drought, flooding, monsoons, rising sea levels and more extreme weather events.
The impacts of climate change affect every country on every continent. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires and droughts threaten the world’s food supply, drive people from their homes, separate families and jeopardise livelihoods. All of these increase the risk of conflict, hunger and poverty.
Visible evidence and climbing numbers demonstrate that climate change is not a distant or imaginary threat, but rather, a growing and undeniable reality.
